Plenty of fireworks occur on this typically exciting encounter between trumpeter Harry "Sweets"
Edison and tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. In Denmark they recorded enough material
on one day with pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Hugo Rasmussen and drummer Svend Erik
Norregaard (with guest spots for trombonist John Darville) to result in two Storyville albums.
While Davis is showcased on "Angel Eyes" and Sweets gets "September Song" as his ballad
feature, it is the four medium-tempo jams (Edison's "Lullaby for Dancers," "Lester Leaps In,"
"Spotlite" and "Blues Walk"), two of which add Darville to the group, that are most memorable.
Recommended, as is the follow-up album Opus Funk.
Trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison and tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, although having
different approaches, always seemed to bring out the best in each other. With pianist Kenny Drew,
bassist Hugo Rasmussen and drummer Svend Erik Norregaard forming a supportive trio and
trombonist John Darville guesting on two of the six numbers, this is a well-rounded set. Sweets has
a duet with bassist Rasmussen on "There Is No Greater Love," Lockjaw takes "You Are Too Beautiful"
as his ballad feature and there are four jams of which this version of "Candy" is a near-classic.
