Biography:
Gene Ammons, who had a huge and immediately recognizable tone on tenor, was a very flexible player who could play bebop with the best (always battling his friend Sonny Stitt to a tie) yet was an influence on the R&B world. Some of his ballad renditions became hits and, despite two unfortunate interruptions in his career, Ammons remained a popular attraction for 25 years.
Son of the great boogie-woogie pianist Albert Ammons, Gene Ammons (who was nicknamed "Jug") left Chicago at age 18 to work with King Kolax's band. He originally came to fame as a key soloist with Billy Eckstine's orchestra during 1944-1947, trading off with Dexter Gordon on the famous Eckstine record Blowing the Blues Away. Other than a notable stint with Woody Herman's Third Herd in 1949 and an attempt at co-leading a two tenor group in the early '50s with Sonny Stitt, Ammons worked as a single throughout his career, recording frequently (most notably for Prestige) in settings ranging from quartets and organ combos to all-star jam sessions. Drug problems kept him in prison during much of 1958-1960 and, due to a particularly stiff sentence, 1962-1969. When Ammons returned to the scene in 1969, he opened up his style a bit, including some of the emotional cries of the avant-garde while utilizing funky rhythm sections, but he was still able to battle Sonny Stitt on his own terms. Ironically the last song that he ever recorded (just a short time before he was diagnosed with terminal cancer) was "Goodbye."

Review:
Along with its fellow CD, Groove Blues, this reissue fully documents all of the music recorded by tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons on the busy day of January 3, 1958. Although there were many guest soloists, only one of the four songs on this half of the set (Mal Waldron's "The Real McCoy") has appearances by John Coltrane (on alto) and the tenor of Paul Quinichette. However, baritonist Pepper Adams is aboard for two of the performances, and flutist Jerome Richardson (along with pianist Mal Waldron, bassist George Joyner, and drummer Art Taylor) are on all four. Ammons is easily the main star (he really excelled in this setting) and is in generally fine form on the two standards ("That's All" and "Cheek to Cheek"), his own "Blue Hymn," and the Waldron original.

Gene Ammons recorded frequently for Prestige during the 1950s and early '60s and virtually all
of the tenor's dates were quite rewarding. This two-LP set reissues Twistin' the Jug plus part of
Angel Eyes and Velvet Soul. Ammons, a bop-based but very versatile soloist, sounds quite
comfortable playing a variety of standards and lesser-known material in groups featuring Jack
McDuff or Johnny "Hammond" Smith on organ and either trumpeter Joe Newman or Frank Wess
on tenor and flute. This version of "Angel Eyes" became a surprise hit. ~ Review by Scott Yanow

There are many Gene Ammons recordings currently available on CD in Fantasy's Original Jazz
Classics, since the versatile tenorman was a longtime Prestige recording artist. Unlike his earlier
jam sessions, this particular outing finds Ammons as the only horn, fronting a talented rhythm
section (pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Doug Watkins, drummer Art Taylor, and Ray Barretto
on congas). Ammons explores standards (including a near-classic version of "Canadian Sunset"),
blues, and ballads in his usual warm, soulful, and swinging fashion. This is a fine outing by one of
the true "bosses" of the tenor.

Большое спасибо за чудесный альбом и за знакомство сновым для меня саксофонистом! Тем более альбом с малым составом, что я очень люблю. а состав то - отличный! Фланаган, как всегда, очень хорош! Судя по этому альбому, саксофонист очень индивидуален. Жаль, что ссылка удалена, пришлось поискать и скачать в другом месте, но оно того стоило! +2

А проще было отправить с форума релизеру сообщение в личку. При этом появляется повод и познакомиться, и пообщаться.
