Jimmy Smith (Джимми Смит)

~ ru.wikipedia.org

Jimmy Smith - Standards (1959)
http://s56.radikal.ru/i154/0906/25/2e8ef90e2e91.jpg
Rewiew:
All of the songs are familiar standards along the lines of “Bye Bye Blackbird,” “I’m Just a Lucky So and So,” “September Song,” “Mood Indigo” and “It Might As Well Be Spring,” and seven of the tracks are previously unreleased. Throughout the album, the trio is relaxed and laidback, resulting in a warm, inviting collection of standards. It’s among Smith’s mellowest recordings, and it’s all the better for it.

Jimmy Smith's much copied jazz technique on the Hammond B-3 organ really came about when
he was unable to find anyone to teach him the ins and outs of the instrument when he made the
transition from piano to organ in 1955. Naturally he started out trying to play it like a piano, but
luckily Smith, who had played bass in school, instinctively understood the importance of keeping
a walking bassline on the foot pedals, as well, and as he began to work out the various stops, he
developed the quick, nimble blues-based style that served him well for the next 50 years, a style
that has influenced every B-3 player on the planet. Sounds Of Jimmy Smith was recorded in a
three-day session beginning February 11, 1957, at Manhattan Towers Studios in New York when
Smith was in the second year of his Blue Note contract. Producer Alfred Lion recorded Smith in a
variety of formats over the three days, and while that included Smith's usual trio approach (his
working band at the time consisted of Donald Bailey on drums and newcomer Eddie McFadden on
guitar), he also recorded Smith solo and in various group settings with guest players like Art Blakey,
Donald Byrd, Lou Donaldson, Hank Mobley, and Kenny Burrell. The results were sprinkled over Smith's
next four of five albums, including this one, which features Blakey on two tracks. Truthfully, Smith was
really at his most relaxed and innovative in the trio setting, and although the unaccompanied "The Fight"
that is included here is striking, spooky, ominous, and churchy as all get out, it really falls outside of
what he normally played. Sounds Of Jimmy Smith, even with the three bonus tracks that are added here,
isn't exactly essential, but like all of Smith's Blue Note albums, it is charming, at times subtly innovative,
and always listenable. It is worth the price of admission alone just to hear Smith and Blakey try to
out-race each other on "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart," which gallops along at an incredibly brisk pace.

Track List:
1  There Will Never Be Another You  (Gordon, Warren)  5:35

Preview:
Jimmy Smith put the Hammond B-3 organ on the jazz map for good in the 1950s. The Sermon, dating
from 1958, is among his best recordings, featuring the exceptional lineup of trumpeter Lee Morgan,
altoist Lou Donaldson, tenorman Tina Brooks, guitarist Kenny Burrell, drummer Art Blakey, and others.
Smith's smooth, vibratoless sound perfectly suits the nimble and prodding leads of the player as he
touches on R&B, soul, blues and, of course, gospel. This brings us to "The Sermon," which is reason
enough to seek this gem out. Smith's group takes the title tune out for a 20-minute, fully improvised,
slow-blues stroll, during which each player shares the spotlight. The soul-stirring feeling set in motion
by Smith rubs off on the other musicians to make this tune and album a defining moment in organ jazz,
and even in soul music. The Sermon stands as a sparkling gem in the Rudy Van Gelder reissue series.

Back at the Chicken Shack is one of organist Jimmy Smith's classic Blue Note sessions, and the
first to draw attention to tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine. Recorded in 1960 with Kenny Burrell
on guitar, Donald Bailey on drums, and Turrentine, the group reaches the peak of funky soul-jazz
that all other challengers of the genre would have to live up to. Included on this uptempo session is
a reworking of "When I Grow Too Old to Dream" (a feature for Turrentine), Turrentine's "Minor Chant,"
two Smith compositions, "Messy Bessie" as well as the set's notable title cut, and the CD-only bonus
track, "On the Sunny Side of the Street." Smith's Midnight Special album was recorded at these same
sessions, and is also exceptional.

Track List:
1  Back at the Chicken Shack  (Smith)  8:01
2  When I Grow Too Old to Dream  (Hammerstein, Romberg)  9:54
3  Minor Chant  (Turrentine)  7:30

Unlike most of the Jimmy Smith recordings from the era, this CD reissue (which adds "If I Should
Lose You" and "When Lights Are Low" to the original LP program) features organist Jimmy Smith's
regular group (rather than an all-star band). With guitarist Quentin Warren and drummer Donald
Bailey completing the trio, Smith is heard in peak form on swinging and soulful versions of such
tunes as "When Johnny Comes Marching Home," "Makin' Whoopee," "Sonnymoon for Two," and
"Mack the Knife." Despite claims and some strong challenges by others, there has never been a
jazz organist on the level of Jimmy Smith.

Track List:
1  When Johnny Comes Marching Home  (Traditional)  7:58
2  Makin' Whoopee  (Donaldson, Kahn)  4:57
3  A Night in Tunisia  (Gillespie, Paparelli)  5:40
4  Sonnymoon for Two  (Rollins)  7:15
5  Mack the Knife  (Blitzstein, Brecht, Weill)  4:58

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Recorded the first day of February in 1963, but not released for a few years, Bucket! is a fairly
typical Jimmy Smith session, featuring the organist running through a selection of originals and
standards with guitarist Quentin Warren and drummer Donald Bailey in tow. The vibe is relaxed,
not too laid-back but hardly energetic, as the trio easily strolls through bluesy ballads and lightly
swinging soulful ballads. It's damning with faint praise to say that nothing exceptional ever happens
but it doesn't need to happen, but that is truly the case here. Bucket! is simply a middle-of-the-road
affair, not quite boring but never quite compelling either. It's good easy-listening music, finding an
organ master kicking out seven tunes (the 2000 CD reissue contains nine cuts, including the
previously unreleased "Trouble in Mind" and an alternate take of "Sassy Mae") without any pressure
and with a minimal sense of style. That makes for a pretty good record, one that hardcore fans will
find satisfying after they've exhausted the greater Smith sessions, but not one that will captivate
the attentions of anyone who isn't a dyed-in-the-wool Jimmy Smith aficionado.

Track List:
1  Bucket  (Smith)  4:43
2  Careless Love  (Handy, Koenig, Williams)  3:53
3  3 for 4  (Smith)  4:49

Review by Scott Yanow
Compared to his earlier Blue Note recordings, organist Jimmy Smith's outings for Verve are not
as strong from a jazz standpoint. Certainly his renditions of the "Theme from Joy House," "The Cat"
and the "Main Title from The Carpetbaggers" are not all that significant. However, this CD has some
tasteful arrangements for the big band by Lalo Schifrin and some good playing by the great organist
on a variety of other blues-oriented material. Also the combination of organ with a big band is
sometimes quite appealing, making this CD worth picking up despite its commercial tracks.

Track List:
1  Theme from 'Joy House'  (Schifrin)  4:38
2  The Cat (from 'Joy House') (Schifrin, Ward)  3:24
3  Basin Street Blues  (Williams)  4:00

Review by Scott Yanow
After leading a series of notable jam sessions for Blue Note, organist Jimmy Smith signed a
lucrative contract with Verve in 1962. Throughout the remainder of the decade, he recorded
songs that ranged from treasures to trash, turning most of the music into bluesy vamps. On
this CD, a reissue of the LPs Got My Mojo Workin' and Hoochie Cooche Man, Smith's repertoire
ranges from Billy Strayhorn's "Johnny Come Lately" and Oliver Nelson's "Blues and the Abstract
Truth" to "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man" and "I Can't Get No Satisfaction." In most cases,
Smith's versions bear little resemblance to the original recordings. The earlier set has Smith
featured with both a quartet and an octet arranged by Oliver Nelson. The remainder of the CD
is a big band with Nelson's charts making the orchestra as exuberant as Smith's solos. Overall,
the CD is not as essential as Jimmy Smith's better Blue Note dates, but is a worthwhile acquisition
for fans of the jazz organ due to his enthusiasm and his ability to uplift the material.

Track List:
1  Hi-Heel Sneakers  (Higginbotham)  5:14
2  (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction [Master Take]  (Jagger, Richards)  4:24

Due to the material, which includes the two-part "Goldfinger," and the themes from Bewitched,
The Munsters and The Man with the Golden Arm, this is one of organist Jimmy Smith's lesser
recordings. The LP does have some reasonably inventive arrangements for the accompanying
big band by Oliver Nelson and some spirited organ playing, but overall is a rather forgettable
and overproduced effort.

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Toward the end of his stint with Blue Note, Jimmy Smith's albums became predictable. Moving
to Verve in the mid-'60s helped matters considerably, since he started playing with new musicians
(most notably nice duets with Wes Montgomery) and new settings, but he never really got loose,
as he did on select early Blue Note sessions. Part of the problem was that Smith's soul-jazz was
organic and laid-back, relaxed and funky instead of down and dirty. For latter-day listeners, aware
of his reputation as the godfather of modern soul-jazz organ (and certainly aware of the Beastie
Boys' name drop), that may mean that Smith's actual albums all seem a bit tame and restrained,
classy, not funky. That's true of the bulk of Smith's catalog, with the notable exception of Root Down.
Not coincidentally, the title track is the song the Beasties sampled on their 1994 song of the same
name, since this is one of the only sessions that Smith cut where his playing his raw, vital, and
earthy. Recorded live in Los Angeles in February 1972, the album captures a performance Smith
gave with a relatively young supporting band who were clearly influenced by modern funk and rock.
They push Smith to playing low-down grooves that truly cook: "Sagg Shootin' His Arrow" and "Root
Down (And Get It)" are among the hottest tracks he ever cut, especially in the restored full-length
versions showcased on the 2000 Verve By Request reissue. There are times where the pace slows,
but the tension never sags, and the result is one of the finest, most exciting records in Smith's catalog.
If you think you know everything about Jimmy Smith, this is the album for you.

1. Sagg Shootin' His Arrow  (Smith)  7:09
2. For Everyone Under the Sun  (Chase)  5:56

It had been nine years since organist Jimmy Smith recorded for a major label when Bruce
Lundvall approached him to make an album for Elektra Musician. Smith plays some unusual
material (including Lionel Richie's "Endless Love" and the "Theme from M.A.S.H.") on this
recording but swings everything and has a particularly strong supporting cast — guitarist
George Benson, Stanley Turrentine on tenor, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Grady Tate.
A fine comeback date.

Track List:
1. Off the Top (Smith) 7:45
2. Endless Love (Richie) 7:19
3. Mimosa (Benson) 5:52
4. I'll Drink to That (Smith) 7:18
5. Theme from M*A*S*H (Suicide Is Painless)(Altman, Mandel) 6:10
6. Ain't Misbehavin' (Brooks, Razaf, Waller) 3:47
7. Jimmy Smith Rap (Smith) 1:10

Personnel:
Jimmy Smith  - Organ, Hammond Organ
George Benson - Guitar
Ron Carter - Bass
Stanley Turrentine - Tenor Saxophone
Grady Tate - Drums
Crusher Bennett - Percussion
Errol Bennett - Percussion

Review by Steve Leggett
Playing piano-style single-note lines on his Hammond B-3 organ, Jimmy Smith revolutionized
the use of the instrument in a jazz combo setting in the mid-'50s and early '60s, and arguably
his best albums for Blue Note during this period were the ones he did with tenor sax player
Stanley Turrentine. Recorded on February 8, 1963, at Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey, and
featuring Quentin Warren on guitar and Donald Bailey on drums in addition to Smith and
Turrentine, Prayer Meetin' is a delight from start to finish. Forming a perfect closure to Smith's
trio of albums with Turrentine (Midnight Special and Back at the Chicken Shack were both
released in 1960), Prayer Meetin' was the last of four albums Smith recorded in a week to finish
off his Blue Note contract before leaving for Verve. The blues roots are obvious here, and the
Smith-penned title track might even be called jazz-gospel, but the single most striking cut is a
version of Ivory Joe Hunter's "I Almost Lost My Mind," with both Smith and Turrentine building
wonderful solos, suggesting new pathways for organ and sax as complementary instruments.

Track List:
1  Prayer Meeting (Smith)  5:45
2  I Almost Lost My Mind  (Hunter)  9:28
3  Stone Cold Dead in the Market  (Houdini)  3:44
4  When the Saints Go Marching In  (Traditional)  6:15
5  Red Top  (Ammons)  7:40
6  Picnickin'  (Smith)  6:30
7  Lonesome Road  (Austin, Shilkret)  8:55
8  Smith Walk  (Smith)  7:12

For this Milestone release, organist Jimmy Smith utilized some of the top veterans then
residing in Los Angeles, many of whom had been long underrated. With sidemen that include
Curtis Peagler on tenor and alto, tenors Herman Riley and Rickey Woodard, either Phil
Upchurch or Terry Evans on guitar, bassist Andy Simpkins, Michael Baker or Frank Wilson on
drums and Barbara Morrison (who takes a vocal on "Farther on up the Road"), this is a
particularly strong band. The fresh material (only "C Jam Blues" and "Honky Tonk" are
standards) and spirited solos make this an easily recommended set of swinging jazz.

Track List
1. Here Comes C.T.  (Burrell)  6:15
2. Farther on up the Road  (Medwick, Robey)  2:55
3. C Jam Blues  (Bigard, Ellington)  6:59
4. Simple Soul Song  (Peagler)  6:14
5. Honky Tonk  (Butler, Doggett, Glover, Scott ...)  8:16
6. No Doubt About It  (Smith)  7:15
7. I Got Mine  (Smith)  6:57
8. Matter of Fact  (Smith)  9:47

Recorded during the same 1990 gig at Fat Tuesday's as the earlier Fourmost CD, Fourmost
Return features Jimmy Smith, Stanley Turrentine, Kenny Burrell, and Grady Tate in great
form once again, so this is no compilation of lukewarm leftovers. The music includes a burning,
up-tempo take of "Sonnymoon for Two" and a bluesy and lyrical interpretation of "Mood Indigo,"
as well as an initially lounge-like "Laura" that gives way to a hot solo by Burrell. Smith also
revives his popular "Back at the Chicken Shack" and adds a good-natured but rather hoarse
vocal to the oldie "Ain't She Sweet." All the players are in top form and this release should
appeal to fans of soul-jazz.

Track List:
1. Sonnymoon for Two (Rollins)  5:36
2. Mood Indigo  (Bigard, Ellington, Mills)  6:15
3. Ain't She Sweet  (Ager, Yellen)  3:31
4. Back at the Chicken Shack  (Smith)  6:36
5. Organ Grinder's Swing  (Hudson, Mills, Parish)  5:06
6. Laura  (Mercer, Raksin)  10:48
7. Blues for Stanley  (Smith)  10:25

Personnel:
Jimmy Smith - vocals, organ
Stanley Turrentine - tenor saxophone
Kenny Burrell - guitar
Grady Tate - drums

Recorded live at Fat Tuesday's, New York, New York on November 16 & 17, 1990.

On March 22, 1960, Jimmy Smith, his trio (with guitarist Quentin Warren and drummer Donald
Bailey), and three notable guests (tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec, altoist Jackie McLean, and
trumpeter Blue Mitchell) recorded enough material for two LPs which were released as Open
House and Plain Talk. This single CD reissues the complete contents of the marathon session.
Four songs feature the full group while the remaining four ballads are showcases for Quebec
("Old Folks" and "Time After Time"), McLean ("Embraceable You"), and Mitchell ("My One and
Only Love"). Although not essential, this well-rounded set has plenty of variety and strong
moments, making it recommended to fans of the jazz organ and straight-ahead swinging.

Track List:
1. Open House  (Smith)  16:13
2. Old Folks  (Hill, Robison)  4:48
3. Sista Rebecca  (Smith)  10:53
4. Embraceable You  (Gershwin, Gershwin)  6:05
5. Big Fat Mama  (Millinder, Simon)  11:11
6. My One and Only Love  (Mellin, Wood)  5:12
7. Plain Talk  (Smith)  15:22
8. Time After Time  (Cahn, Styne)  6:31

Personnel:
Jimmy Smith - organ
Quentin Warren - guitar
Donald Bailey - drums

Ike Quebec - tenor sax
Jackie McLean - alt sax
Blue Mitchell - trumpet

A follow-up to the mostly heated performances of Damn!, this CD features organist Jimmy
Smith sticking to ballads and slower material. There is a sextet rendition of "Stolen Moments"
(with both Roy Hargrove and Nicholas Payton on trumpets); duets with both trumpeters,
bassist Christian McBride, and guitarist Mark Whitfield; a trio; a quartet; and solo organ
renditions of "Oh Bess, Oh Where's My Bess?" and "What a Wonderful World." Despite the
constant changing of instrumentation, the results (although pleasant) are uneventful and
somewhat predictable. Good for late-night background music rather than for close listening.

Tracks List:
1. Stolen Moments  (Nelson)  7:00
2. You Better Go Now  (Graham, Reichmer)  5:15
3. Angel Eyes  (Brent, Dennis)  8:00
4. Oh Bess, Oh Where's My Bess?  (Gershwin, Gershwin, Heyward)  4:10
5. Slow Freight  (Fein, Mills, Ram)  5:52
6. Tenderly  (Gross, Lawrence)  6:25
7. Days of Wine and Roses  (Mancini, Mercer)  7:00
8. Li'l Darlin'  (Hefti)  6:15
9. What a Wonderful World  (Thiele, Weiss)  4:25

Roy Hargrove (Trumpet and Flugelhorn)
Nicholas Payton (Trumpet)
Mark Whitfield (Guitar)

"The Boss" finds Jimmy Smith backed by a bare-bones lineup (just guitar and drums), but the
musicianship is top-notch. Jimmy's playing is more psychadelic and wild than his studio stuff
from the late 1960s, hinting towards where his sound was headed in the early 1970s (as well
as the sound of mainstream music, in general).

Track List:
1. The Boss  (Smith)  7:55
2. This Guy's in Love With You  (Bacharach, David)  8:48
3. Some of My Best Friends Are Blues  (Smith)  5:52
4. Fingers  (Jones)  10:30
5. Tuxedo Junction  (Dash, Feyne, Hawkins, Johnson)  9:29

Personnel:
Jimmy Smith - organ
Donald Bailey - drums
Nathan Page - guitar

Классическими стали его ранние работы, такие как «The Cat» «A Walk on the Wild Side», «The Sermon».
