The Jeff Hamilton Quintet - Indiana (1982)
Review:
A star sideman who has proven to be a supportive and inventive straight-ahead drummer in both combos and big bands, Jeff Hamilton has had few opportunities to lead his own record dates. His debut, which would not be followed by an encore for a dozen years, is a quintet outing with two great saxophonists (tenorman Bob Cooper and altoist Lanny Morgan), pianist Biff Hannon, and bassist John Clayton. Mark Murphy dropped by to sing "Split Season Blues" (dedicated to the odd 1981 baseball season). Hamilton and Clayton took care of most of the writing for a set that has four originals and five fresh versions of standards, including Wayne Shorter's "One By One" and "Girl Talk." Fine and straightforward (but not overly predictable) jazz.
